“Of 14” counts the capabilities each tool documents publicly (native = 1, partial = 0.5), from our AI Answer Sheet Evaluation Landscape 2026. It measures how much of the job a tool covers, not how accurately it marks.
What “copy checking” means here
In Indian schools a “copy” is a student's answer sheet or exam notebook, and copy checking means marking it. This guide covers software that checks students' written answers: it reads the handwriting, awards marks per question and returns feedback. It is not about plagiarism or AI-content checkers, which answer a different question (who wrote this?), though a few tools below include them.
How we chose
- We started from the 38 tools in our landscape research and kept the ones that check written answers, plus one bubble-sheet tool as the budget pick for multiple choice.
- We picked one tool per job (the reader it fits best), then ordered the list by how much of the checking job each documents.
- Every capability and price comes from the vendor's own pages, read in October 2026 and linked in the sources. Anything not documented counts as not documented.
- We did not test any tool's accuracy, including Evalezy's. Run a sample of your own copies through any tool before you buy; the 12 questions to ask a vendor help.

What to look for in AI copy checking software
- It reads real handwriting, not only bubbles. 20 of the 37 other tools in our research document reading handwritten answers natively.
- It marks against your scheme, per question, with reasons. Half marks and a written reason per answer make a mark checkable. See how to write a marking scheme.
- It knows whose copy it is. Only 9 of 37 document identifying the student natively; without it someone sorts 200 copies by hand.
- Students get their copy back, marked. 6 of 37 return the student's own sheet marked up. A score table teaches less than a red cross next to the line that lost the mark.
- A teacher has the last word. 26 of 37 document a review step. Marks should stay drafts until a person releases them.
- The price is per unit you can count. Per page or per copy is easier to budget than per seat when test volumes swing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI copy checking software?+
It depends on the job. For checking a class's or an exam's handwritten answer sheets in English, Evalezy documents the most of the job in our research (12 of 14 capabilities: reading handwriting, marking against a scheme with half marks and reasons, bulk upload, matching copies to students, a red-pen checked copy, teacher review, question paper import and a public API) at a published ₹1 per page. For answers in Hindi or another Indian language, Eklavvya documents eight languages. For university courses graded by staff, Gradescope. For US essays, CoGrader. For human marking at board scale, an on-screen marking vendor such as Coempt Onmark. Evalezy publishes this guide; every score links to its source.
Can AI check handwritten answer sheets?+
Yes. Current tools read handwriting from scans or phone photos with vision models and mark each answer against a marking scheme. The best results come from treating AI marks as a first check that a teacher reviews: almost every tool in our research builds in a teacher review step, and Evalezy keeps every mark as a draft until a teacher releases it.
Is there a free AI copy checker?+
For individual use, yes: AnswerWriting.com has a free tier for UPSC and PSC aspirants, CoGrader's free Starter plan includes handwritten essays, Gradescope's Basic plan is free (staff grade, no AI marking) and ZipGrade grades 100 bubble sheets a month free. For institutes, most tools quote a price. Evalezy has no free plan; it charges ₹1 per page checked, and failed, stopped and unreadable copies are free.
Which AI answer sheet checking tools are made in India?+
Evalezy, Eklavvya, CrazyGoldFish, Smart Paper and Extramarks mark answers with AI. The on-screen marking providers Coempt Onmark, DEXIT Global, MeritTrac, TCS iON, Excelsoft Saras and Mercer | Mettl move scanned scripts to human examiners. SuperKalam, AnswerWriting, PrepAiro, Likhit and CollectorBabu give UPSC aspirants AI feedback on their own answers.
What does copy checking mean?+
In India a "copy" is a student's answer sheet or exam notebook, and copy checking means marking it: ticks, crosses, marks per question and the total. It is not plagiarism or AI-content checking. If that is what you need, Turnitin is the usual choice for essays, and CoGrader and Top Marks AI include AI-writing detection.
How much does AI answer sheet checking cost?+
Few tools publish prices. Evalezy charges ₹1 per page checked ($0.01 outside India). CoGrader starts at $15 per teacher per month, UPSC answer-evaluation apps charge aspirants from about ₹299 a month, and ZipGrade costs $6.99 a year for multiple choice only. On-screen marking providers and most institutional AI tools quote per exam or per contract.
